Crossroads area welcomes new GM dealer to Corinth

By Jebb Johnston
Daily Corinthian Staff Writer

After several years of keeping his eye on Corinth, veteran auto dealer Frankie Blackmon finally made his move.
The owner of Frankie Blackmon Chevrolet in Tupelo since 1985 is now also owner of the former Premier Automotive on U.S. Highway 72 West. The dealership had only about a week of down time between owners.
“I’ve in the last few years noticed that Corinth seems to be growing,” said Blackmon. “It seems to be a good market to be in. We’re just excited to be a part of Corinth.”
Blackmon said the dealership -- his first expansion outside of Tupelo -- will continue to offer the five GM lines. The staff will be a mix of Premier holdovers and employees coming from Blackmon’s former Buick lot.
While his son runs the Chevrolet store in Tupelo, Blackmon said his daughter and son-in-law will be heavily involved in running the Corinth store.
Originally from Meridian, Blackmon in 1995 acquired the Buick-Olds-Isuzu dealership, which remained under his ownership until the current transition. Blackmon has since 2003 owned a Hyundai-Mazda dealership which is relocating to the former Buick location at Barnes Crossing.

Tupelo based Frankie Blackmon GM franchise expands to Corinth location

Corinth – A well-established name in automotive sales joins the Corinth marketplace when a Frankie Blackmon franchise opens Monday.
The company has been in Tupelo since 1985, and is making its first expansion into another market.
"We feel like Corinth is a growing area with lots of development,: Blackmon said. "It’s a central community and we feel like the market will be good for us."
Blackmon purchased the GM dealership previously known as Premier Automotive, which has five lines of General Motors vehicles: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac and GMC.
In Tupelo, Blackmon began with a Chevrolet dealership, but has expanded to include a Buick dealership and a Hyundai-Mazda dealership.
"We’re consolidating and realigning a bit in Tupelo," Blackmon said. "We’re selling the Buick dealership and moving Hyundai-Mazda to the Barnes Crossing location (in Tupelo)."
Not only will the expansion be good for Corinth, said Mayor Jerry Latch.
"We know they have a very successful and long-running business," Latch said. "Their presence in Corinth will be another boost to our local economy as they continuse to grow, and we’re glad to have them here."
In 2005 Blackmon received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award for his efforts in business and his work in the community.
Several key personnel from Tupelo will run the Corinth store initially, Blackmon said.
"We will continue to offer excellent service, and in fact are expanding out service, at the Frankie Blackmon Chevrolet store in Tupelo," Blackmon said.

TUPELO -- Frankie Blackmon began his automotive career selling parts at a Chevrolet dealership in Meridian 47 years ago. He worked his way up the management chain at a Buick dealership there before buying his own Chevy dealership in Tupelo
in 1985.

Twenty years and additional Buick/Isuzu and Hyndai/Mazda franchises later, his hard work has been recognized nationally.

His fellow auto dealers nominated him not only for his efforts in the business but also his work in the community, which led to Blackmon recently receiving the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award.

"It's a big honor," said Blackmon. "It's something I had worked for and it's great to represent the dealers in the state."

The award was given to only 65 of the more than 19,500 eligible dealerst.

William Lehman, president of the Mississippi Automobile Dealers Association, said Blackmon is well-respected by the approximately 220 new vehicle dealers in the state.

"In addition to all that he's done, he also served as chairman of the board of our association about four years ago during some difficult times when we felt like we needed strong leadership, " Lehman said. "We felt that was just one reason why he should be a candidate for this award."

But it's the community service aspect that the award recognizes the most.

He is a member of the Tupelo Rotary Club, the Community Development Foundation, the Better Business Bureau and the Tupelo Future Focus Program, to which he donated $25,000. He's also a big supporter of little league softball and baseball programs, which he said is one of his most fulfilling civic activities
